In 2006, I had just gotten out of a long-term relationship and was looking for a new “workout”. My new workout, Bikram Yoga, became my everything. It was my exercise, my hobby, my best friend, my boyfriend, my church. It was all I could talk about. Right after my first class, I wondered if they’d think I was weird if I went back the next day. It wasn’t long before I was regularly taking two classes a day and thinking about teacher training. I had zero interest in being a teacher but simply wanted to immerse myself in this yoga. And it happened to be in Hawaii when I was looking at going.

In September of 2007, off I went to Hawaii to endure 9 weeks of teacher training. There are plenty of people who enjoyed teacher training. I wasn’t one of them. I had an overwhelming fear of public speaking. Thankfully I finished training, but I left the Bikram Yoga world for about 7 months. For my 30th birthday, I drove to Charlottesville, Virginia and stumbled into the Bikram Yoga studio. I asked to teach, they said yes, and I stammered my way through my first class. It took me about 5 years to feel comfortable on the podium. Now my teaching has become as important and enlightening as my personal practice.

I’ve been a massage therapist since 2001 and while I’ll always have my gift of touch, I can help so many more people on a greater scale as a yoga teacher. I love watching students with current or past injuries heal themselves with this transformative practice. I’m always watching for their proper alignment as I believe that is one of the keys to this practice.

After years of asking me to open a studio, my husband, Frank, finally convinced me by promising to practice twice a week. June 17th, 2017, we opened the doors to Bikram Yoga Catonsville. Being the owner is still a struggle for me, but I look at it like growing as a student and teacher. Like Kyle says, “You can’t learn to swim by sitting on the side of the pool.” I practice and teach almost everyday. When I’m not in the hot room, I love being with my dogs Mabel and Noodles and going to Costco with Frank. When you own a yoga studio, you go to Costco a lot.
